Currency
The official currency of Costa Rica is the colon. The colon exchange
rate <-- link --> floats in relation to the U.S. dollar. U.S.
dollars and other currencies can be exchanged at the San Jose
Airport, local banks, and at most large hotels. U.S. currency is
widely accepted throughout Costa Rica. Most major credit cards are
also accepted, and are preferred to Traveler's Cheques. Best of all,
because the cost of living is so much lower than in the United States, you get a lot more for your money in Costa Rica!
Caution: Although they will certainly offer, it is not recommended
to exchange money with cab drivers or people on the street because
of the large volume of counterfeit currency in circulation.
